David Sullivan has hinted at West Ham's transfer plans for this summer
West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan has told the club's official website that three areas of the team need to be strengthened for next season.
The Hammers enjoyed a remarkable first half of the season, and looked like they would be challenging for European qualifcation at the turn of the year.
Yet with just two wins in 2015, it's all gone wrong for Sam Allardyce, and his future at the club is once again in doubt ahead of the summer transfer window.
Many expect Allardyce to be replaced as West Ham prepare for a big Upton Park send off in their final season before moving to the Olympic Stadium in 2016.
No matter who is in charge of West Ham next season, reinforcements will be needed on the pitch, with the Hammers needing new signings to really take the next step.
Sullivan has now told the West Ham official website that he wants to strengthen the squad in three areas this summer, whilst also suggesting that Arsenal loanee Carl Jenkinson's future won't be sorted imminently.
"Our planning for strengthening the squad in the summer has been underway for some time," said Sullivan. "I think we need goalscorers, a right back and maybe a central defender. The situation with Carl Jenkinson won’t be clear until the end of the season but we will have to sign a right back one way or another."
"We of course bought Cheik Kouyate to play in midfield and as a fourth choice centre half but two years in a row now we’ve been caught out in central defence so it might be that we look to strengthen in that area for next season."
"We have Doneil Henry of course and he won impressive reviews for his performances at Blackburn Rovers before getting injured. If he’s ready for the Premier League then he could get a chance, otherwise it might be that he goes out on loan again to gain more experience," he added.
With injuries to James Tomkins and Winston Reid, West Ham could certainly stand to add another centre back, whilst the failure of Mauro Zarate's signing last summer means that another striker will be on the wish list - especially with Andy Carroll's continued injury problems

I know where you are coming from but it might be that the need to defend with us is a tad more urgent :-) or that the teams he has played for dominate possession and there is less demand on his defensive side? At West Ham its a different type of DM we need I think (well again just my opinion) Song's lack of pace is exposed too often in a defensive capacity although I would still like to see him with us next season. That said, I think Barca will want too much for him.
To be honest, I do not think we have had a really good defensive minded midfield worker with the ability to get about the pitch since Behrami. IMHO a player like him would be perfect. Mind you, I want the uninjured version we saw in the first season and a half he was with us :-)

But it is the role Song has played with his previous clubs, why should it be different with us?
I think both him and Kouyate could do "the Matic role" very well if they got the orders from the manager but like you say it is all about opinions....

Oh and I think Song is too one paced for the DM role and also sees himself more as a creator than a spoiler IMHO

Its all about opinions but Kouyate is not for me, a natural defensive midfielder. He likes to run with the ball and is more box to box. I am talking about a Matic type who does the unsung work and sits deep in front of the back four and rarely ventures forward and spends his time closing space and getting a foot in (used to be called tackling but since physical contact is now outlawed I renamed it ;-) ).

Good post but we already have the Matic type in Kouyate and Song so by your reckoning we only need 2, the attacking mid playmaker and the winger............

If Allardyce stays then midfield needs very little doing to it. If a new manager wants to start playing through it then it might need strengthening.

Liam Moore the Leicester C and young England centre back who is also well equipped as a full back,is suffering from a bad loss of confidence and is currently on loan at Brentford and having a mare in their reserves,
a spell alongside Ginge in our reserves and some guidance from Alvin behind the scenes and with BILIC in control and he should develop into the player he was becoming two years ago,

Midfield is the area in most need of strengthening but with quality and to give us the cover and options to play to feet. We lack mobility and movement in the middle and a defensive midfielder. As mentioned, a player like Modric, Coutino for creativity, a DM like Matic and a flying winger who has excellent delivery from crosses like Di Maria. Should only cost about 100 million :-)
Ok, we might have to settle for lower budget options but 3 players like this would transform our team and give us strength and depth. We could argue we need another CB and forward but for me these 3 types of midfielders would provide the service for the likes of Sakho and Valencia to really thrive on.
I suspect our budget will be between 30 - 50 mill + wages etc... which takes it up another 20 mill. I would prefer we went for quality rather than quantity but the problem is we have a fairly thin squad when u take out the dead wood of CFC, Jarvis, Demel, Nene, Nolan and even Amalfitano and Zarate although these last 2 have not been given enough minutes on the pitch to know but I get the feeling they are fringe players anyway?
We shall see but I get the feeling Sullivan thinks its about strikers and not the supply to those strikers?

No, I suggested our aporoach has caught us out 2 years in a row,Therefore it's flawed and needs addressing and Sulluvan is saying much the same thing.
I also pointed out that Koyoute is a vital part of our midfield and Sullivan seems to agree with that too.

The simple FACT is you didn't read the full interview just the version someone nick and gave yourself a mighty pat on the back and stuck 2 fingers up at everyone when in fact you wasn't right at all.

My point was our preffered 4th choice is also.currently.our best perfrorming midfielder so it weakens another area when he plays CB.
As Sullivan said he was 'bought to play in midfield' and that this has caught us out 2 years running now which was my other issue.
